Once fit, he has to be a better option than the flailing Antonio.

I used to love Michail for his endless running and the way he brushed defenders aside, but watching him at the tail end of the season and especially against AZ (both games) he is a shadow of what he used to be. It's just embarrassing how easy he goes down considering how strong he is supposed to be and he seems reluctant to break a sweat unless he has the ball at his feet.

For me, as much good as he has done, one of the main reasons we've not pushed on in the League as much as we probably could have, is because Antonio has been our Number 1 striker for too long.

Gianluca Scamacca has not had the best of starts and it's fair to say he has not settled but personally I am prepared to give him the benefit of doubt. He scored a few decent goals and showed that he does have some quality. It you look at our other new signings, Kehrer and Paqueta both had a very slow start to the season but have improved as they've caught up with the pace of the Premier League.

I hope that if Scamacca was given the same chances he may have shown some improvement over the course of the season too.

So assuming he is recovering from his injury, he will get a full pre-season under his belt (something most summer signings don't have the luxury of as we always tend to do our business well into pre-season and even when the regular season is under way) and hopefully it will be like a new signing next season.

Yeah, it was clear from how he played at Sassuolo last season that Scamacca works best with the wide players making runs into central areas that he can lay the ball off to, rather than them just sticking to the flanks and leaving him isolated. It doesn't matter if we replace Benrahma with someone more suited to playing that way as Moyes seems to like the wide players to hug the touchline and be ready to track back.

comes down to squad planning and picking the right players.
Scamacca comes deep, links play etc. In that event, the two widemen have to be goalscorers who run off him and into the space that he creates by dragging centre backs out of position.
The best example (spits) obviously is Kane & Son.

Benrahma isn't that - he's a winger. Bowen could be.
If Scamacca stays then Benrahma becomes pointless. If we get an Antonio clone, he doesn't.
Trying to get Scamacca to be an Antonio clone is stupid and pointless.
Not especially complicated, but seemingly beyond people getting paid millions of pounds a year to figure out.

I think the problem with Scamacca is he basically told Moyes to fuck off. It’s definitely not about his on-field competences or performance.

With Paqueta I think we can see he just needed to improve fitness and up his percentages and work rate.

With Scamacca it probably needs a "sea change" in how he plays in order to fit in this current set up. What I see is Haller was a failed signing but the club just didn't learn by it.

Another player who has got better the longer he hasn't played, he'll be getting compared to MVB in 6 months.

I thought he looked OK when he's actually been on the pitch, but to me didn't look that clinical, sluggish, and lacks pace. A couple of hollywood raking passes isn't enough for 40 mil.

There probably is a player there, but I doubt it's going to happen for him here now somehow.

This there’s a lot of truth in that. Pacqueta has adjusted to the work rate needed in English football and the most successful players/strikers here do the same.

I keep reading on here on various threads that it is Moyes' system that is the reason that Scamacca had but limited success. That may be true in part, certainly, I can agree Scamacca isn't a great hold-up target. But neither does he have exceptional pace, that he can play off the shoulder of defenders (Vardy Style), He isn't physical or that powerful in the air (despite his height).

He does have good feet for a tall bloke, knows where the goal is and is an excellent striker of the ball.

However, I think he needs to work harder, without that he is unlikely to succeed big-time in the Premiership.

Antonio is a rare kind of player, not a true striker really but is pacey strong and can play in that one-up front role and we’ve built a system around it that other strikers find hard to adapt to. We will never get the best out of strikers like Scamacca and ings if we don’t play a system that suits them. We need to start changing it soon as Antonio has limited toke at the top level, Shirley

Wasn't there loads of rumours that Antonio was pissing off the dressing room earlier in the season, maybe him being out front had something to do with that. I did find it odd, though maybe nothing in it.

RE: Antonio- as much as anyone else, him walking round at the front looked more like a 'goodbye I'm off' than almost all the other players. He may well go in summer.

RE: Scamacca- the bloke's hardly had a fair crack of the whip under Moyes. He's made no effort to put him in a position to succeed at all, and it seems clear the player basically checked out around Christmas time. (which I can understand why but can't condone) If he stays, it'll be a long hard season of much the same next time round unless the manager goes. I think if Moyes stays, he doesn't. Would be a great shame as if he leaves, he will score a lot of goals for someone else. It'll be similar to Haller. Averages roughly 1 goal per two games for almost his entire career, aside from West Ham where it was 1 in 5, and when he was a young kid at Auxerre.

Apparently the club wanted him to have the knee operation earlier, but he was reluctant to have it.

I think he can be a serious player but spent most of the games he did play isolated against a couple of centre halves with everyone else camped back in their defensive positions and not joining him.

If (like in the second half v Leeds) we pushed up on the front foot & maybe had Bowen and Harvey Barnes either side he would look a different player.
If Rice must go then Paulinha + one other together with Paqueta could support.

I think he's a good player and someone we could build on without Moyes. If the papers are to be believed and we win the conference league, Moyes will stay and that will be the end of Scamacca, and we'll likely get fleeced on the return transfer. His knee operation was to clean it up which has kept him out the latter half of the season. That's a procedure most players would opt for in the offseason which suggests to me a massive issue between player and coach.

In our current system, Antonio is clearly the best option as results have borne out the last two months. The problem is that system has seen us just above relegation, and i doubt very much it will be "effective" next year without Declan Rice bossing the midfield.

Scamacca is an excellent player . Reminds me a bit of sheringham. but like him cannot be expected to run the channels it's not his game . Another proper winger on the left and he and us is in serious business.
